Muirs Beach and Freycinet Marine Farm

 12th Feb 2023

It is our last day at Coles Bay and the weather is still a bit variable, but it has not interrupted our plans. A bit of afternoon rain seems normal at the moment.

For our morning walk today we just go across the road and walk as far along Muirs beach as we can. It is a popular beach with a few brave swimmers and a lot of walkers and very few fishermen. The beach sweeps along the North shore of Coles Bay and is also home to a couple of exclusive resorts.

There are great view looking back along the beach towards the coast, highlighting the steep granite peaks, The Hazards, behind which lies Wineglass Bay on the ocean side.

There are 2 exclusive resorts along the beach, Saffire, and Edge of the bay resort. Both are pretty private and would probably be very nice.

Walking along the beach has helped our appetite and the skies are starting to cloud over a little with a corresponding drop in temperature. Looks like a bit of rain might be on the way.

Lunch is at the Freycinet Marine Farm, a bit of a backtrack along the road we came in on to Coles Bay, but is renowned for its oysters and mussels, both of which are locally farmed. It was about a 10 minute drive from our cabin and reasonably busy when we arrived. You can either buy fresh seafood to take away, or they have a restaurant cooking seafood for dine in or takeaway.

Choosing lunch was not difficult, we decided to dine in, under cover in an open dining area. Oysters natural and mussels were the order of the day.  Both were excellent, and a cool beer also added to the experience.

It has started to rain and is now quite cool, so we had to rescue our golfing wet weather gear from the car to stay warm.

Back in our warm cabin we spent the rest of the afternoon at the park, and decided to give the Iluka Tavern another go, this time for dinner.

The food was surprisingly good and both food and wine reasonably priced.

Tomorrow we are off to Hobart and hope to take in the last day of the Wooden Boat Show.
